CASE STUDY: KNEE PAIN
Patient: Thomas, 32, Handyman
1 The Problem
Thomas attended PK Physiotherapy with persistent pain in both knees that was significantly affecting his work and daily activities. As a handyman, he regularly needed to kneel, squat, climb stairs and carry heavy materials, but these activities had become increasingly painful.
The symptoms had gradually worsened over several months. The pain became so severe that Thomas was considering a corticosteroid injection recommended by his GP. Eventually, he was forced to stop working and remained on sick leave for several weeks. Even driving became uncomfortable due to prolonged knee flexion.
Thomas was concerned that permanent damage may have occurred and was worried about his ability to return to work.
2 Assessment Findings
A detailed assessment identified bilateral patellar tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee), with significant irritation of both patellar tendons. Marked weakness of the quadriceps muscles was present, together with reduced lower limb strength and altered movement patterns that were increasing stress through the knee joints.
No evidence of ligament injury, meniscal damage or any condition requiring surgical referral was identified.
3 Treatment
- Detailed physiotherapy assessment
- Progressive quadriceps and lower limb strengthening programme
- Manual therapy
- Electrotherapy
- Therapeutic ultrasound
- Kinesiology taping (K-Tape)
- Mobility and flexibility exercises
- Personalised home exercise programme
4 Outcome
Pain gradually reduced and knee function improved significantly. Thomas regained strength, confidence and tolerance to kneeling, squatting and stair climbing.
He successfully returned to unrestricted work duties and recreational exercise without the need for injections or further medical intervention.
Patient Perspective
“The exercises were challenging, but they worked. My knees feel much stronger now and I can work normally again without worrying about the pain.”
