CASE STUDY: BELL’S PALSY
Patient: Magdalena, 48
1 The Problem
Magdalena contacted PK Physiotherapy after developing sudden weakness on the right side of her face. Simple daily activities such as smiling, speaking and closing her right eye had become difficult. The symptoms were understandably worrying and were beginning to affect her confidence.
Before attending physiotherapy, Magdalena had been assessed by her GP and started on steroid treatment. Despite this, facial weakness remained significant three weeks after the initial onset.
2 Assessment Findings
A detailed assessment confirmed right-sided Bell’s Palsy. Movement in the forehead was absent and the muscles around the right eye were significantly affected, resulting in incomplete eye closure and excessive tearing. Small facial movements were present but remained very limited.
Importantly, no symptoms suggested a stroke, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome or other neurological condition requiring urgent medical intervention.
3 Treatment
Treatment focused on supporting recovery of facial muscle function while protecting the eye and avoiding excessive muscle fatigue.
Magdalena received:
- Individual facial rehabilitation exercises
- Neuromuscular re-education
- Gentle facial massage
- Electrotherapy
- Advice regarding eye protection and eye care
- Home exercise programme
Close communication with her GP recommendations was maintained throughout treatment.
4 Outcome
Improvement was noticeable within the first few treatment sessions. Facial control gradually returned, eye closure improved and facial symmetry became increasingly normal.
Following four physiotherapy sessions, Magdalena achieved full functional recovery and returned to normal daily activities without noticeable facial weakness.
Patient Perspective
“The improvement was much faster than I expected. Being able to smile normally again and close my eye properly made a huge difference to my confidence and everyday life.”
