What is an Initial Physiotherapy Assessment?
An Initial Physiotherapy Assessment is the first and most important step in understanding your symptoms and developing an effective treatment plan. The assessment is designed to identify the likely cause of your problem, understand how it affects your daily life and determine the most appropriate approach to treatment.
At PK Physiotherapy in Northampton, every assessment is carried out by Piotr Kolodziej, Specialist Physiotherapist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience.
What Happens During the Assessment?
Your appointment lasts approximately 60 minutes and includes:
- Detailed discussion about your symptoms
- Medical and injury history
- Review of previous treatments and investigations
- Functional assessment
- Movement assessment
- Strength testing where appropriate
- Special tests where appropriate
- Discussion of findings and diagnosis
The aim is not only to identify where the pain is located, but also to understand why the problem developed and what may be contributing to it.
Do I Need a Referral?
No.
You can book directly with PK Physiotherapy without a GP referral.
However, if you have already seen your GP, consultant or another healthcare professional, any relevant information can be helpful during the assessment.
Do I Need a Scan Before My Appointment?
No.
Electrotherapy is generally used to help manage symptoms and improve comfort during rehabilitation.
Long-term recovery often depends on addressing the underlying cause of symptoms through appropriate exercise, movement, education and rehabilitation.
Not necessarily.
Many musculoskeletal conditions can be assessed effectively without imaging.
If you already have MRI, X-ray, ultrasound or consultant reports, you are welcome to bring them with you. However, most patients do not need a scan before their first appointment.
Will I Receive Treatment During My First Visit?
In most cases, yes.
Following assessment, treatment may begin during the same appointment if appropriate.
This may include:
- Advice and education
- Manual Therapy
- Sports Massage
- Exercise Prescription
- Shockwave Therapy
- Electrotherapy
- Therapeutic Ultrasound
- Laser Therapy
- Kinesiology Taping
Treatment recommendations are always based on assessment findings and individual needs.
Will I Receive Exercises?
In most cases, yes.
Exercise rehabilitation is often an important part of recovery. Patients usually leave the clinic with personalised advice and exercises tailored to their condition and goals.
What Should I Wear?
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows the affected area to be examined easily.
For example:
- Shorts for knee, hip or ankle problems
- Vest or loose-fitting top for shoulder problems
- Comfortable clothing for back and neck assessments
When Should I Consider Seeing My GP First?
If you are experiencing symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fever, significant trauma, progressive neurological symptoms or any other concerning medical symptoms, it may be appropriate to seek medical advice before physiotherapy.
If necessary, guidance will be provided during the assessment regarding further medical investigations or referral.
